The History of Lowry: The Francis B. Lowry Airfield was built in 1937 and has been an integral part of Denver and the entire country’s history. The 1,866 acre site now known as Lowry helped train over 55,000 men for WW II. When The Lowry Air Force Base closed in 1994, Denver and Aurora lost 7,000 jobs and $295 million in annual spending. Thus, The Lowry Redevelopment Authority (LRA), a quasi-governmental entity, was then founded to redevelop the site.

Hangar 2 Lowry DenverLowry became one the nation's earliest and most successful examples of urban planning and revitalization. In fact, its efforts resulted in numerous awards including the 1999 Sustainable Community Award from the US Conference of Mayors and the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Secretary’s Award for innovative collaboration and sustainable growth. All these efforts were well worth it as now 25,000 people live, work and go to school in Lowry.
