The History of Lowry: The Francis B. Lowry Airfield was built in 1937 and has been an integral part of Denver and the entire country’s history. The 1,866 acre site now known as Lowry helped train over 55,000 men for WW II. When The Lowry Air Force Base closed in 1994, Denver and Aurora lost 7,000 jobs and $295 million in annual spending. Thus, The Lowry Redevelopment Authority (LRA), a quasi-governmental entity, was then founded to redevelop the site.
Lowry became one the nation's earliest and most successful examples of urban planning and revitalization. In fact, its efforts resulted in numerous awards including the 1999 Sustainable Community Award from the US Conference of Mayors and the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Secretary’s Award for innovative collaboration and sustainable growth. All these efforts were well worth it as now 25,000 people live, work and go to school in Lowry.

- Lowry Town Center - At Lowry’s Town Center, shopping and restaurants are just down the tree-lined street. This is an urban blend of loft homes, apartments, senior living, retail services, office space, schools and cultural facilities — truly the urban lifestyle at its best. - Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum - Located on the former Lowry Air Force Base, the location for this aviation museum could not be more fitting. The museum itself is housed in a 40,000 foot hangar originally built in 1939. The museum has exhibits, cockpit demonstration and even a summer Space Camp. The museum is a testament to the history of the Lowry area.
- Hangar 2 - Located on the former base, this area is not just home to the Air & Space Museum. This section of Lowry boasts The Lowry Beer Garden, North County Restaurant, a gym and many offices for small businesses.
