More about Denver's Sloan's Lake Neighborhood

Events: Sloan's Lake park hosts countless great events throughout the year including races and art festivals, but the Dragon Boat Festival tops them all.  Attracting people from all over the city, this 2-day event is sure to dazzle.  Honoring the ancient Chinese sport, the Sloan's Lake event includes opening ceremonies, traditional boat races of over 50 teams, and countless food and marketplace vendors.  Once you attend, you'll know why it's called one of Colorado's greatest festivals!

History of Sloan's Lake: The history of Sloan's Lake is part of this area's charm.  While the exact story may never be known, it is clear that the lake did not always exist.  In the mid to late 19th century, a farmer named Thomas F. Sloan was granted this land by president Andrew Johnson.  A common legend states that Sloan dug a well for his farm and, in doing so, inadvertently struck an aquifer, causing his land to flood by the next morning.  From here, it grew into a lake.  The area surrounding this lake was once home to Manhattan Beach, the first amusement park west of the Mississippi River, which later burned down.  The history of this area is just as outstanding as the park itself.

Boundaries: The boundaries for Sloan's Lake are 26th Ave to the North, Colfax to the South, Sheridan to the West, and Federal to the East.

Neighborhoods Similar to Jefferson Park: Highlands, Jefferson Park, Berkeley, Wash Park, City Park
